Just in time for the 70th anniversary of the original Fifty Fathoms diver, this timepiece is set to make waves in the watch industry.
For those unfamiliar with nautical measurements, a fathom is equal to six feet, making fifty fathoms a depth of 300 feet. This was groundbreaking in its time and set the standard for water resistance in professional dive watches.
The Fifty Fathoms quickly earned favor among pioneers in scuba diving, worn by legendary figures like Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his team during the filming of "The Silent World" in 1956. Unlike the MoonSwatch, this modern reinterpretation of the Fifty Fathoms boasts a mechanical movement, the Swatch Sistem51. Introduced in 2013, this innovative movement, crafted from 51 components, is machine-made yet offers an impressive 90 hours of power reserve when fully charged. The 42.3mm case is constructed from Bioceramic, a unique blend of ceramic and bio-sourced material derived from castor oil. Even the NATO strap, included with each watch, is made from recycled fishing nets, reinforcing the commitment to sustainability.

The addition of an automatic movement and a superior depth rating does push the Blancpain x Swatch Fifty Fathoms to a higher price point compared to the MoonSwatch. It's a testament to the enduring appeal and significance of this iconic timepiece in the world of watchmaking.
